Founded in 1851, St. John’s School is an independent, co-educational school for boys and girls aged 11-18. The School offers day, flexi and weekly boarding options, and is renowned for its outstanding pastoral care, academic strength and for providing a first-class all round education. Set in Leatherhead in the United Kingdom, life at St. John’s is underpinned by a strong sense of community, a vibrant house system and an exemplary co-curricular program.
When COVID hit, the school seamlessly enabled its remote learning strategy with OneLogin.
Moving to dependable, robust SSO
Though steeped in tradition, St. John’s School is committed to continually enhancing teaching and learning. In more recent years, this has translated into growing usage of digital technology – always with an emphasis on ease of use. Hand in hand with this, the school has called upon Single Sign-On (SSO) solutions with the goal of easing application access.
Once its cloud-based SSO solution provider stopped supporting provisioning for independent schools, St. John’s migrated to OneLogin. According to Mark Sartorius, Assistant Head of Digital Strategy at St. John’s, St. John’s chose OneLogin because its features exceeded the ones offered by the other vendors. This included the ability to integrate with MySchool Portal, which is the school’s SSO front end, and support for two-factor authentication. “It’s challenging to find a solution that does everything you want, but OneLogin does just that,” explains Sartorius.
Rapidly laying the foundation for remote learning
With OneLogin in place, St. John’s was prepared for the start of the 2020-2021 school year – whether that meant remote or on campus. The implementation was completed in just two-and-a-half weeks, ensuring the school was able to deliver a full curriculum and hold assemblies virtually. “The only changes are more extensive use of Microsoft Teams for teachers to present their lessons and accessing applications from home instead of from campus if need be,” continues Sartorius.
In fact, Sartorius feels OneLogin is fundamental to the school’s remote learning strategy. “In all elements of digital strategy in education, you need SSO that enables easy access to all the platforms and apps you use. In times of uncertainty, our use of OneLogin’s reliable platform with no downtime is fundamental to our continuing education,” he says.
Enabling continuous learning
Though pupils and staff returned to campus in late August, the school realized it needed to be prepared for the possibility of hybrid teaching in the event of additional COVID outbreaks. With OneLogin in place, everyone can rest easy.
A busy summer of preparations meant that St John’s was ready to welcome pupils and staff back to campus safely in August. Classrooms were adapted for social distancing and designated areas enable pupils to remain within their year group ‘bubbles’ for lessons, break times and lunches. The school introduced additional handwashing facilities and toilets around the campus and is cleaning more frequently.
While the circumstances on site are slightly different, St John’s is emphasizing the safety of every pupil and staff member along with the exceptional educational experience that is at the heart of what it does.
“SSO is vital in an educational environment because of the number and diversity of applications that our pupils and staff use. With the reliable, easy-to-use OneLogin solution, we can fluidly handle whatever learning model we need to support,” concludes Sartorius.
