It creates a much more efficient management of our systems. We can group students by cohort, keeping them all together, and then once they graduate, we deactivate them all together.

The Story

Every academic institution wants the best security for their students’ data. But all too often, data security comes at a price. For FVI School of Nursing and Technology, that price came in the form of efficiency for its IT team and usability for its students.

FVI is a premier nursing and technological institute with accelerated classes that often result in a rapid student turnaround of just three weeks. Their dedication to student success is clear in the high NCLEX pass rates, including the 91% 2022 NCLEX pass rate and the 100% Miami Campus NCLEX pass rate for the first quarter of 2024. The school’s mission is to create personalized, hands-on training for immediate, real-world application, and it considers student success to be its number one priority.

FVI’s mission made user-friendliness, particularly for students, a prime concern for FVI. However, IT manager Eusser Darling and his team found themselves provisioning incoming students manually for each new wave of incoming students. Between that and the multiple login points for different required programs, access issues abounded, and critical time was lost – even despite orientations and trainings developed to help students avoid access problems.

“Come the first day of class, we’d get bombarded with calls about login and access issues,” said Darling, noting the challenges already facing students entering such demanding fields. “We started to think about the student user experience and how confusing it can be to have so many different areas to log into.”

But, of course, a balance needed to be struck between the usability and the centralization of student and administrative logins, and control over what those users could access. FVI began looking for a SaaS-based solution that would allow for secure, centralized access, while also ensuring it carried SAML integration capabilities.

They found the answer in OneLogin. OneLogin gave students and staff a simplified, centralized login experience. Moreover, it integrated with SAML for smooth authentication that gave users access to all the different programs and platforms they might need. Yeny Montelier, IT Support Specialist, stated, “All the students, employees and instructors have their resources on one board, and, with just one click, they can access the system with no problem.”

More importantly, it gave access to only what that user might need, as FVI uses the roles feature to differentiate between student and administrative users, providing access to the applications users need for their role and nothing more. Additionally, with OneLogin features like MFA and SSO, the team minimized both security and access issues.

Besides the solution’s user-friendliness for the students and staff, the time that it saved the IT team in provisioning incoming students and de-provisioning graduated ones was miles ahead of the old way of doing things. “It creates a much more efficient management of our systems,” Darling, FVI IT Manager, stated. “We can group students by cohort, keeping them all together, and then once they graduate, we deactivate them all together.”

The simplicity, security and user-friendliness made OneLogin the right solution for FVI, allowing its IT team to save enormous amounts of time, its staff to keep credentials securely centralized, and its students to have all their resources available with one click.
