Top 5 Things I Learned at Gartner IAM

This year, OneLogin was in full force at Gartner IAM 2018 in Vegas. This is one of the most important events for us as the category leaders in Unified Access Management. We were there to learn from our peers, hear from the analysts, and take pulse of what’s coming in identity and access management. Our Founder and CTO, Thomas Pedersen, led a packed crowd on how to tackle on-prem identity, and we had a massive amount of excellent conversations at our booth. Here are the top five things I came away with from the insightful and productive week:

  1. Introducing ContinuousNEXT - This was a theme Gartner introduced during the opening keynote describing a new world where change must be managed continuously, DevOps becomes more critical than ever, and automation becomes mainstream. Look for machine learning, analytics, metadata, contextual access, and adaptive access to be at the core of tomorrow’s access management solutions.
  2. Privileged Access Management (PAM), Identity Governance & Administration (IGA), and Identity & Access Management (IAM) are inextricably linked - The lines continue to blur between these traditionally distinct technology categories. Many organizations can’t decipher when they need one vs another, putting the onus on vendors to be more consultative than ever.
  3. Hybrid is Here to Stay - While cloud remains hot, the attendees and analysts I spoke to said a hybrid environment comprised of traditional on-premise applications AND a mix of cloud applications is the reality, and it’s going to be that way for a very, very long time.
  4. Identity-as-a-Service (IDaaS) is Hot - By 2022, 80% of access management deployments worldwide will be delivered as a service, up from 50% today.
  5. People are as Important as Ever - Event planners told me this year’s IAM show was the largest ever. Events like this one prove that good old networking is as popular and necessary as it’s ever been - even OneLogin’s sponsored dinner on Tuesday night was oversubscribed. From the analysts on stage to the vendors, prospects and customers interacting with one another, it all comes down to relationships at the end of the day. Thanks to the analysts and Gartner for hosting such an amazing event. Looking forward to Gartner IAM next year!
