Berklee Harmonizes App Single Sign-On and Alumni Services with OneLogin

Berklee College of Music in Boston is the largest independent college of contemporary music in the world. Berklee wanted to improve the user experience for its 6,000 faculty, staff, and students, as well as its 55,000 alumni, by making it easier to access password-protected software applications. Previously, users had to log into each application separately. The college needed a single sign-on (SSO) solution to make users’ lives easier and boost alumni engagement.

“Compared with the other solutions, we found the OneLogin user experience and user interface to be more flexible.”

Ease of Integration and Flexibility of OneLogin

Simplicity of infrastructure management was a priority for Berklee as they explored options. They required a system with easier integration and better support than existing open source identity projects. OneLogin was already a strong contender since its IAM (Identity and Access Management) solution offers ease of integration using SAML and Google, as well as social sign-in – all essential to enhancing access for the Berklee community.

Clinching the choice, “OneLogin was fairly easy to implement. Compared with the other solutions, we found the OneLogin user experience and user interface to be more flexible,” says Gaël Frouin, Information Security Officer for Berklee College of Music.

Rapid User Adoption and Extended Services via SSO

Initially, Berklee integrated the following apps into their OneLogin SSO portal: WebEx for web conferencing, Symplicity career management resources, Parchment for musical transcripts, Lynda.com for corporate learning and training, and a number of institutional websites. Both end users and IT appreciated the flexibility and increased security of the OneLogin solution.

OneLogin’s ease of integration enabled rapid rollout of new services to alumni as well. “Alumni only had an email before. Through OneLogin, we gave them access to additional applications—the transcripts, our main website, a notification center, and career manager,” says Frouin.

Stronger Relationships with Faculty, Staff, Students, and Alumni

Berklee has seen several positive effects since shifting to OneLogin. First, there is strong global user acceptance, especially at the college’s campuses in Boston and Valencia, Spain, as well as online. The additional services now offered through OneLogin are strengthening relationships between the college and its community of over 60,000 users, including faculty, staff, students, and alumni.
